Voters Show Support for Road Millages on August Primary Ballot

LANSING, MI — Voters in local elections across Michigan expressed strong support for road millages again during the August 2 Primary Election. Voters passed 98 percent of the 114 millage renewals on the ballot and 81 percent of the 28 new road millages proposed.

“Voters continually demonstrate that road improvement and maintenance are top priorities for their communities,” said Denise Donohue, Director of the County Road Association (CRA) of Michigan. “County road agencies appreciate the support from members of the community who get out and vote to support millages that will improve the local county roads.”

And township millages are critical as matching funds to get roads repaired locally.

New Millages
Regarding the 28 proposed new road millages, 23 passed. The five new millage proposals that did not pass were in Alpena Township (Alpena County), Meyer Township (Menominee County), Pine Township (Montcalm County), Wilcox Township (Newaygo County), and Novesta Township (Tuscola County).
Renewal Millages
Of the 114 road millages proposed for renewal, there were 108 township and four countywide (Leelanau, Midland, and two in Tuscola) questions on the ballot. All but two road millage renewals were approved by voters.

All election results, including millages, are unofficial until certified by the State Bureau of Elections.

The 83 members of the County Road Association of Michigan represent the unified voice for a safe and efficient county transportation infrastructure system in Michigan, including appropriate stewardship of the public’s right-of-way in rural and urban Michigan. Collectively, Michigan’s county road agencies manage 75 percent of all roads in the state, including 90,000 miles of roads and 5,700 bridges. County road agencies also maintain the state’s highway system in 63 counties. Michigan has the nation’s fourth-largest local road system.
